This study investigated the community structures and 20 activities of SRB and MA in anaerobic sewer biofilms (average thickness of 800 μm) 21 using a combination of microelectrode measurements, molecular techniques and 22 mathematical modelling. It was seen that sulfide was mainly produced in the outer layer 23 of the biofilm, between 0 300 μm, which is in good agreement with the distribution of 24 SRB population as revealed by cryosection fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). 25 AEM Accepts, published online ahead of print on 5 September 2014 Appl. Changes in Microbial Biofilm Communities during Colonization of Sewer Systems.

The coexistence of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and methanogenic archaea (MA) in anaerobic biofilms developed in sewer inner pipe surfaces favors the accumulation of sulfide (H2S) and methane (CH4) as metabolic end products, causing severe impacts on sewerage systems. In this study, we investigated the time course of H2S and CH4 production and emission rates during different stages of biofil...

Optimization of intermittent, simultaneous dosage of nitrite and hydrochloric acid to control sulfide and methane productions in sewers.

Free nitrous acid (FNA) was previously demonstrated to be biocidal to anaerobic sewer biofilms. The intermittent dosing of FNA as a measure for controlling sulfide and methane productions in sewers is investigated. The impact of three key operational parameters namely the dosing concentration, dosing duration and dosing interval on the suppression and subsequent recovery of sulfide and methane ...

Acido solfidrico nella letteratura internazionale

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are widely existed in oil production system, and its H2S product inhibits rhamnolipid producing bacteria. In-situ production of rhamnolipid is promising for microbial enhanced oil recovery. Inhibition of SRB, removal of H2S and production of rhamnolipid by recombinant Pseudomonas stutzeri Rhl were investigated. Strain Rhl can simultaneously remove S(2-) (>92%) an...

Modeling the pH effect on sulfidogenesis in anaerobic sewer biofilm.

Wastewater pH affects the transfer of H2S from liquid to gas and hence impacts on the extent of odour and corrosion. Sewage pH may change significantly in sewer networks due to, for example, the fermentation of organic compounds, particularly when the hydraulic retention time is long, the discharge of trade wastes that are organic-rich or with extreme pH, and the intentional addition of alkali ...

Reversing methanogenesis to capture methane for liquid biofuel precursors

BACKGROUND Energy from remote methane reserves is transformative; however, unintended release of this potent greenhouse gas makes it imperative to convert methane efficiently into more readily transported biofuels. No pure microbial culture that grows on methane anaerobically has been isolated, despite that methane capture through anaerobic processes is more efficient than aerobic ones. RESUL...
